Ecotourism Charleston SC

The goal of ecotourism is to allow visitors to experience new places while at the same time minimizing the impact to the environment. Often, an ideal way to see a city without making a negative impact on its environment is to explore by boat.

One city which is ideally suited for boat excursions is Charleston, South Carolina. With waterways which feature highly complex and diverse ecosystems as well as a wealth of wildlife, eco-friendly boat tours are an ideal way to experience this beautiful city.

One of the best ways we can hope to preserve natural habitats is to help others understand their importance. By taking the time to explore by boat, you can capture a unique view of an area not seen by those on land. In addition to an up close and personal view of the many species of fish which call these waters home, touring Charleston’s waterways by boat allows you the opportunity to observe dolphins as they swim and play, often right alongside the boat.

By taking children on an eco-tour, you are providing them with the opportunity to learn why it is important that these habitats be protected, as well as sharing an experience with them that they will remember for many years to come.

An experienced captain who is familiar with the complex waterways in and aroundCharleston, South Carolina can guide you through a truly unforgettable tour, perfect for nature lovers as well as people of all ages.

Inshore fishing Charleston SC

Anyone who visits Charleston soon realizes that this beautiful city has plenty to offer when it comes to outdoor activities. With its natural beauty, magnificent harbor, and complex system of estuaries, visitors can easily spend days exploring the coastline.

An ideal way to get a feel for the city is to see it from the water. Traveling by boat allows you views that those on land are not able to see, and provides a unique perspective. It also allows for some of the most amazing fishing opportunities on the East Coast.

For those travelers who want to explore the inshore areas of the Lowcountry, the numerous inlets here are teeming with many varieties of fish such as redfish, trout, flounder, as well as many others. For the best possible experience, team up with an experienced inshore fisherman who can guide you to the best fishing holes.

If sport fishing is more your style, the waters off the coast of Charleston offer ample opportunities to fish for  Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, Dolphin, Tuna, Wahoo, or King Mackerel, just to name a few. With an experienced boat captain, your fishing experience will truly be one to remember.

Whether you are looking for inshore or offshore fishing, or just want the opportunity to see parts of Charleston that many visitors miss, consider spending at least part of your visit on the water. There is truly no better way to explore this coastal city.

Now is a great time to go on an Ecotour in Charleston!

Now is a great time to go on a Ecotour in Charleston!

Spring is an awesome time for birders and birding, as many

birds are migrating to the dredge spoil islands to begin

their families!  Brown Pelicans, Black Skimmers, Royal

Terns, Forster’s Terns, Oyster Catchers and many more

can be observed finding their mates and beginning their nests

http://www.crbo.net/Charleston.html

.

Most people will never know the incredible beauty unless

they go on a boating tour in Charleston Harbor, the only

way to really get up close to islands like Crab Bank

Crab Bank is an island that was created off of Shem Creek in

Mt. Pleasant by dumping the dredge spoil from years of dredging

in the Charleston Harbor. Man-made islands like these have

become ideal nesting sites for birds because they don’t have

natural predators like raccoons and minks that love to eat

the eggs.  Thousands of birds colonize these islands every

year to create a birder’s paradise!  These islands are now protected

sanctuaries where only water craft can get close. By going on a boating ecotour one can experience a part of Charleston that most visitors miss!

What was the first Canal built in the United States?

The first canal ever built in the USA was the Santee Cooper Canal. The Cooper river only used to begin around the Monks Corner area of SC. The Santee River flowed all the way down from the Appalachian Mountains and emptied into the Georgetown area. Products from the upstate were shipped down the Santee River to Georgetown and then loaded onto ocean going vessels and brought to Charleston where they were then shipped through out the world. A lot of cargo was lost on the ocean voyage so the plan to build a canal that connected the Santee river to the Cooper river was developed. The building of the canal was held up during the American Revolution, but was completed shortly afterwards. Prominent citizens such as Francis Marion, William Moultrie, and others were involved investing to build the canal.

How Hilton Head got its name?

How a tiny island helped build a colony?

When the king claimed Carolina for England, it was great news for the British colony on the island of Barbados. Barbados had been settled by the British in 1629 and become extremely wealthy from the cultivation of sugar cane. Once the Dutch fleeing the Catholic inquisition in South America arrived on the island they brought sugar refining technology that helped to explode the Sugar Revolution and made the island extremely wealthy. Barbados also became one of the most populated places on earth at that time and most of the rainforest was cleared to plant sugarcane. This made the wealthy planters hungry for more land and natural resources such as lumber. They became very excited with British claims in North America and began making plans to explore the area and set up a financing group called the “Barbadian Adventurers”. Several expeditions were sent to explore the region, one lead by William Henry Hilton who explored the area around Beaufort which now bears his name Hilton Head.
